Watch | Khori Gaon: The Failed Promise of ‘Jahan Jhuggi Wahin Makan’

Faridabad,July 6 dmanewsdesk: In Faridabad, a colony of more than one lakh people known as Khori Gaon has been living in 5,100 homes on Aravalli forest land for 11 years. But after 11 years of waiting, the Supreme Court issued a judgement ordering the removal of all encroachments on forest land within six weeks, saying, “If the police need to be used, do that too.” On June 30, a huge lathi charge was conducted by the police against the villagers. Police batons were used against women.

“I’ve been mercilessly beaten up by the police; I can’t even show you my marks because they hit my entire body. I’m worried about my children because I’m the only working woman in the house because my husband died months ago,” Kalpana, a villager, told The Wire.

Many villagers are demanding new land from the government, saying they don’t have any place to live and they’ve bought this land from the mafia. But the government is sticking to the apex court’s order and asking villagers to empty their homes as soon as possible.

“Water tankers are not allowed in the village. My husband died because of the extremely hot temperatures,” Husna Begum told The Wire.

The Wire also tried to contact SHO Kuldeep Kumar, but there was no response from his side.
