Pondy sees marginal rise in daily coronavirus cases

Puducherry, July 7 dmanewsdesk: Puducherry witnessed a marginal rise in the number of new daily cases of COVID-19 with 189 infections added during last 24 hours ending 10 am on Wednesday, taking the aggregate to 1.18 lakh.

The new cases were identified at the end of examination of 6,756 samples.

Director of the Department of Health S Mohan Kumar said the new cases were spread over Puducherry 129, Karaikal 33, Mahe 23 and Yanam 4.

Two more persons succumbed to the viral infection raising the overall toll to 1765.

He said the active cases were 1753 (242 in hospitals and 1511 in home isolation).

While 225 patients recovered and were discharged today the overall recoveries stood at 1,14,898.

The Director said 13.59 lakh samples have been examined so far and of them 11,67,685 were found to be negative.

The test positivity rate was 2.80 percent.

THe Director noted that the fatality and recovery rates were 1.49 percent and 97.03 percent, respectively.

Meanwhile, 37,465 health care workers and 22,918 front line workers have been vaccinated so far in the Union Territory.

The health department has inoculated 4.02 lakh people belonging to the category of either senior citizens (60 years and above) or those above 45 years with co morbidities since March last.

Kumar said that 5.47 lakh people including those who had second dose of vaccination have been covered so far in Puducherry and outlying regions.
