Jimmy Anderson (3/8) dismissed Shubman Gill (50), Ajinkya Rahane (0) and Rishabh Pant (11) in quick succession to tilt the game in the favour of the visitors.
India skipper Virat Kohli (45 batting) was left with an onerous job of saving the game which looks improbable.
Chasing a daunting 420-run target, India resumed at 39 for one.
